Dry ridge installation in Billingshurst replaces the crumbling mortar under your ridge tiles with a system that holds each tile mechanically. It needs far less upkeep, and every quote is free.
Traditional ridge tiles sit on a bed of sand and cement. Over the years, frost, wind and the roof's own movement crack the mortar until it falls into the gutters and the ridge tiles work loose. In a storm, loose ridge tiles can lift or slide off.
A dry ridge system uses a roll of breathable material along the ridge, with clips and screws holding each ridge tile to a timber batten. Nothing relies on mortar, so there's nothing to crack or wash out, and the ridge still lets the roof space breathe.
Since 2015, the British Standard for slating and tiling has called for ridge and hip tiles to be mechanically fixed rather than held by mortar alone. A dry ridge meets that, so it's a sensible choice when your ridge needs work or your roof is being replaced.
We check the ridge, the hips if your roof has them, and the tiles either side, and look for signs that the ridge batten or timbers need attention. Your free quote covers the system, any new ridge tiles needed and access.
On the day, we lift the ridge tiles, clear away the old mortar, fix a new ridge batten and lay the roll along it. Each tile goes back on with clips and screws, and the ends are capped. Old mortar is cleared from the gutters before we leave.
Tell us what's happening with your roof. We aim to respond the same day, and there's no call-out charge.
We look at the roof, explain what we've found in plain terms and give you a free, no-obligation quote.
We carry out the work we quoted for, then talk you through what we've done before we leave.
The price depends on the length of the ridge, whether hips need doing too, if your old ridge tiles can be reused and how easy access is. A short ridge on a bungalow is a quicker job than a large hipped roof. We give you a free quote after a visit.
Often, yes. Most standard ridge tiles can be cleaned of old mortar and refitted with a dry ridge system, which keeps the roof looking the same. Damaged tiles, or unusual shapes the system doesn't suit, may need replacing, and we'll tell you before we start.
For most roofs, yes. Repointing renews the mortar, but it will crack again in time. A dry ridge removes the mortar altogether and fixes each tile mechanically, so it needs much less upkeep. If your ridge has only a few small cracks, repointing can still be a reasonable short-term fix.
Most homes take a day, sometimes less for a short ridge. Larger hipped roofs, or roofs that need scaffolding and new ridge tiles, can take longer. We'll give you a likely timescale with your quote and pick a dry day to do the work.
